The IPS-MPS’23 Organizing Committee is looking forward to welcoming you to Malaysia soon!

The highly diverse and multi-cultural Malaysian society values the distinct difference between public and private life, which may differ from Western and some other cultures. In Malaysia, public displays of affection, particularly extended intimate gestures, are generally discouraged, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. While there is no dress code, modesty is generally expected from both men and women. Moreover, privacy is greatly valued and an individual’s personal activities in their own space are considered their own business.

This code applies, but is not limited, to the IPS-MPS’23 congress and includes all registered attendees, staff, guests, volunteers, and trainers, including the Pre- Congress Training Programme, the congress itself, and related post-congress events.

At IPS-MPS’23, we strive to promote a safe environment of learning and knowledge exchange for all congress attendees from diverse backgrounds regardless of race, gender, religion, disability, or other diverse aspects of identity.

The IPS-MPS’23 congress serves as a forum for the open and respectful dialogue of research and ideas within a tolerant community. We expect all participants to treat each other with respect and dignity, and without discrimination or harassment of any kind.

The organising committee of IPS-MPS’23 will not tolerate any inappropriate behavior or misconduct, behaviors which are outside of the laws and legislations of the host institutions or the attendee’s home institution, or behavior that makes any attendee or other member of the public uncomfortable, including, but not limited to:

  • Use and carrying of illegal drugs
  • Public display of nudity, indecency, or sexual acts
  • Harassment of any type, whether physical, verbal, or via virtual means (e.g., social media), including unwanted sexual attention and stalking
  • Discrimination against any person for any reason
  • Disruptive and destructive behavior
  • Assault or unwanted contact in any form
  • Abuse of power
  • Aggressive confrontation that leads to the receiver feeling unsafe
  • Culturally insensitive/inappropriate behaviors in public places, especially in/near places of worship

While we wish to foster an environment where academic debate and opposing ideas can be discussed in open forum, we appreciate all attendees understanding and respecting the boundaries of other attendees, and recognising the appropriate time, place, and energy for such discussions.

The organising committee reserves the right to dismiss anybody found to not be conforming to these values, or anybody who is found to be currently sanctioned for any form of harassment; they also reserve the right to report the incident to the appropriate authorities at the individual’s home institution, or to take appropriate legal action as required.

Leading up to, during, and following the conference, all attendees are encouraged to reach out to any of our trained Welfare Officers (updates will be provided shortly before the congress). These individuals will have distinct nametags during the conference and are prepared to handle any issues that may arise relating to attendees’ welfare during the conference proceedings. They can be contacted at [email protected] (shortly before, during and shortly after the congress) or approached in person at any time during the event. Members of the organising committee can also assist you to locate the nearest Welfare Officer, who will ensure a safe and confidential space to meet with you.

Participants are also encouraged to visit their respective Embassy or Foreign Office’s website for additional travel information on Malaysia. The IPS-MPS’23 organizing committee is always available to answer any questions or offer travel suggestions. Please feel free to email us at any time at [email protected].

Yours,

IPS-MPS’23 Organizing Committee
